What Is Dyspareunia?
Dyspareunia (painful sex) is persistent or recurrent genital pain during intercourse or other sexual activity that involves penetration. Pain with intercourse can be superficial (with vaginal entry) or deep (with deeper penetration or thrusting) or both. During sexual activity one can experience the sensation of deep pelvic pain burning, feeling “raw or dry”, a throbbing ache, or lower abdominal discomfort.
What are the Causes of Dyspareunia?
Painful intercourse is the main symptom of Dyspareunia and it’s root causes can be associated with several vaginal conditions:
Vaginal dryness
Presence of scar tissue – episiotomy scar or pelvic surgery scar
Vaginismus (muscle spasms of the pelvic floor)
Menopause
Related conditions of Endometriosis, IBS, Interstitial Cystitis
Pelvic organ prolapse
Emotional factors like stress/trauma
How Can Physical Therapy Help?
Dyspareunia is a symptom, and treatment strategies are based on cause of dysfunction. Pelvic floor muscle dysfunction is commonly associated with painful intercourse. The discomfort can be addressed with any combination of the following physical therapy treatments.
