Trigger finger is a condition affecting tendons that flex the fingers and thumb, typically resulting in a sensation of locking or catching when you bend and straighten your digits. Other symptoms may include pain and stiffness in the fingers and thumb. The condition is also known as stenosing tenosynovitis.

Trigger finger is usually caused by overwork or strain. It’s most often caused by jobs or hobbies that involve repetitive movements, such as gripping, lifting, and squeezing. Health conditions such as diabetes, low thyroid function, or rheumatoid arthritis can also cause Trigger Finger.

Symptoms typically do not resolve without skilled Occupational Hand Therapy services.   

Hand therapy is beneficial for individuals with trigger finger by focusing on conservative, non-surgical interventions to alleviate symptoms and improve hand function. Hand therapy involves the use of specialized techniques and exercises. A splint may be needed to hold and rest the inflamed area.
