What Is Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction?
Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD), also known as pubic symphysis dysfunction, occurs when the pubic symphysis joint becomes sufficiently relaxed to allow instability in the pelvic girdle. Symphysis pubis dysfunction is a common and debilitating condition affecting women, as it mostly happens during/after pregnancy.
On average the pubis gap moves about 2mm. Anything more than 10 mm is known as diastasis of the symphysis pubis (DSP). In severe cases the symphysis pubis may partially or completely rupture.
What are the Causes and Symptoms of Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction?
When you’re pregnant, your body produces a hormone called relaxin that makes the ligaments in the joint between your left and right pelvic bones more relaxed. This loosening is intended to increase your range of motion in order to help you give birth, but they can also lead to instability in the joint or make it mobile in ways it’s not meant to be.
Symptoms of Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction
Pain in pubic region, inner thighs, groin, sometimes described by women as “pain in vagina”
A clicking or grinding in pelvic area
Pain associated with weight bearing exercises, like walking
Painful locomotion, like turning in bed, rising from a chair, standing on one leg
How Can Physical Therapy Help?
Having good alignment between two pubic bones is crucial to avoid any pain/strain in pubic and sacroiliac joints. Our physical therapist will first analyze your pelvic alignment and core strength. Then, we will design a comprehensive treatment plan based on your specific needs.
Physical Therapy Treatment Options:
Muscle energy technique (MET) – For misalignment correction.
Manual Therapy – Deep tissue release, trigger point release, positional inhibition to address high resting tone in inner thigh muscles, gluts, lower back muscles.
Core Stabilization and Kegel Exercise – To reduce further stress on joints and create pelvic stability
Strengthening exercises for muscles of hips – Gluts, abductors, rotators
Ergonomic and postural education – Having a correct posture with sitting and standing can reduce undue pressure on pelvic joints
Do You Accept Health Insurance?
