What Is Pelvic Girdle Pain?
The Pelvic Girdle has 3 joints- Pubic Symphysis, right and left Sacroiliac joints. Any dysfunction in either of the joints can cause pelvic girdle pain. Pain can be local to the lower back and/or to the pubic and groin region, it may also radiate to buttocks, thighs. It is most likely to develop during pregnancy and/or postpartum phase.
What are the Causes and Symptoms of Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction?
Normally, ligaments provide good structural support to the joints of pelvis. With hormonal changes during pregnancy these ligaments become more flexible and allow the pelvis to widen during the birthing process. However, they can also lead to instability in the joint or make it mobile in ways it’s not meant to be, causing Pelvic Girdle Pain.
Symptoms of Pelvic Girdle Pain
Pain in the pubic region, lower back, hips, groin, thighs or knees
A clicking or grinding in pelvic area
Pain made worse by movement, like walking
Painful locomotion, like turning in bed, rising from a chair, standing on one leg
How Can Physical Therapy Help?
Our physical therapist will take a detailed history of daily activities causing the pain, examine joints and muscles of lower back, hips, evaluate walking pattern, posture and core stability. Then, we will design a comprehensive treatment plan based on your specific needs.
Physical Therapy Treatment Options:
Manual Therapy – for the joints & muscles which are stiff and causing hypermobility in other joints.
Stabilization Exercises – Core stabilization (including abdominal, hip and pelvic floor muscles) is very important
Ergonomic and postural education – Having a correct posture with sitting and standing can reduce undue pressure on pelvic joints
