De Quervain’s is a painful condition affecting the tendons on the thumb side of the wrist. The tendons in this area can become highly irritated, limiting their ability to move and support the thumb. These tendons extend from the thumb to the arm, and in severe cases, symptoms can be felt along this entire area.

Common causes are repetitive use of the thumb, such as lifting a child, carrying groceries or weights, yoga, opening jars, pinching, and typing. About 4 females for every 1 male experience this condition, especially mothers in their third trimester.  Symptoms typically do not resolve on their own, and the evidence suggests the best outcomes result from skilled Hand Therapy services.

Fortunately, De Quervain’s can be treated successfully without surgical or injection treatment. A customized and progressive approach under the skillful guidance of a Hand Therapist is required. Treatment tends to be most effective with custom splinting (made to fit your hand and more effective than over the counter options) to help rest the joint, as well as safe stretches, exercises, and soft tissue work which all progress based upon objective and subjective responses.
