What Is Interstitial Cystitis?
Interstitial Cystitis (IC) or Painful Bladder Syndrome (PBS) is a chronic inflammatory condition of the urinary bladder wall that causes bladder frequency, bladder urgency and/or bladder pain. There are two main types of IC/BPS – Non-Ulcerative and Ulcerative.
In many cases symptoms can be mistaken as a urinary tract infection, however urine tests do not reveal infection. Most patients take several months to years, and endless rounds of antibiotics before a proper diagnoses.
What are the Symptoms of Interstitial Cystitis?
The symptoms of Interstitial Cystitis vary case by case. The symptoms may change from day to day or week to week. Or they may remain constant for months or years, then go away, only to return several months later. Menstruation, stress, sexual intercourse and certain foods may cause flare ups.
Common Symptoms of Interstitial Cystitis (IC):
Urinary frequency – Urinating more than once every 2-3 hours
Urinary urgency – Sudden urge to urinate
Urination – Pain and/or burning with urination
Urethra – Pain at the urinary outlet
Pressure/pain – Lower abdominal or bladder
Urinary leaking – Due to pressure from laughing, coughing or lifting
How Can Physical Therapy Help?
Interstitial Cystitis is a chronic inflammatory condition of the bladder. Over time this can cause surrounding muscles (pelvic floor, abdomen, hip) and fascial tissue to develop restrictions. These restrictions play an important role in creating the array of symptoms that IC causes.
A specialized physical therapy plan utilizing myofascial release, trigger point release, visceral mobilization can help rebalance these tissues. Additionally, bladder re-training, relaxation breathing techniques, and stretching can also help relieve symptoms.
