What Is Dry Needling?
Dry Needling is an advanced therapeutic technique that involves inserting one or more thin monofilament needles into specific areas such as trigger points, tendons, or along neural pathways. A trigger point is a band of tight and sensitive muscle tissue that can affect muscle function, restrict range of motion, or cause pain.
The needles are typically left in the muscles for anywhere from 10 seconds to 20 minutes, depending on the treatment goals and the targeted area. This technique can also be combined with electrical stimulation to further enhance its effects.

Why Do Physical Therapists Use Dry Needling?
Physical therapists use dry needling to help decrease muscle tightness, improve blood flow, and reduce pain. When integrated with other physical therapy treatments, dry needling can facilitate a faster recovery. It allows therapists to target and mobilize connective tissues that are otherwise difficult to access manually.
Dry needling is usually paired with exercise and other physical therapy techniques to prevent trigger points from reoccurring.
Does Dry Needling Hurt?
The act of dry needling typically doesn’t hurt. The therapist uses a guide tube to insert a sterile, thin filiform needle into the target muscle group. It’s not like a needle used for blood draws; it’s much smaller. Most people don’t feel the needle going in because it’s so small, but sometimes, they may feel a prick. When the needle is in the trigger point, it can be painful and cause a twitch response. Afterward, you may feel tightness or soreness near the insertion site for couple days.
What Conditions Dry Needling Can Help With?
Dry Needling can treat many musculoskeletal conditions including:
Shoulder pain – Rotator cuff pain, Biceps tendinitis
