Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition that causes numbness, tingling, and pain in the hand and forearm. The condition occurs when one of the major nerves to the hand — the median nerve — is squeezed or compressed as it travels through the wrist.

Common causes are repetitive gripping, typing, lifting, poor posture, vibration (a ball hitting a racket, using tools), and being in an inflamed state (such as having arthritis, pregnancy, a fall, or injury).  Symptoms typically do not resolve on their own, and the evidence suggests the best outcomes come from skilled Occupational Hand Therapy, often in conjunction with custom splinting.   

Fortunately, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can be treated without surgery or injections, and benefits from individualized therapeutic exercise program. A customized and evidence-based approach under the guidance of an Occupational Therapist is often required. Treatment includes establishing the appropriate level of resistance, exercise variation, and sets/reps, which evolve as the patient progresses their rehabilitation journey.
