What Is Pelvic Pain?
Pelvic Pain is associated with a range of internal or external women’s health conditions that cause pain within the pelvis, lower abdomen or genital areas. The pain or discomfort can be steady, or come and go. It can also present as a sharp pain in a specific spot, or a generalized dull pain. Pelvic pain is considered “chronic” when it lasts for more than 6 months.
1 in 7 American Women experience pelvic pain. 61% of that segment are not diagnosed correctly.
What are the Causes of Pelvic Pain?
Sometimes the exact cause of pelvic pain for many women can be elusive, despite lots of tests and scans. A physical therapy evaluation of the pelvic region’s muscles strength, flexibility and joint alignment can provide more detailed information.
Below are the common conditions that can cause pelvic pain:
Painful Bladder Syndrome/Interstitial Cystitis
Dyspareunia (Painful Intercourse)
Vulvar Vestibulitis
How Can Physical Therapy Help?
The goal of physical therapy is to reduce pelvic pain. Our pelvic physical therapist will design a customized treatment plan to target your specific symptoms and improve outcomes.
Treatment options vary by condition and can include:
Manual Therapy – Trigger point release, Myofascial Release, Muscle energy techniques, Strain-Counterstrain
Neuromuscular reeducation – Coordinated work of diaphragmatic breathing and pelvic floor muscles to enhance relaxation and promote awareness of muscles tension in pelvic region
Biofeedback – Pelvic floor identification and awareness, strengthening for uptraining and relaxation for downtraining, coordination training
Postural education and functional training – To improve alignment of trunk and pelvis , enhance sitting and standing tolerance
Patient education – Mindful breathing, use of vaginal dilators, home exercise, education about vulvar skin care
